Ways To Get Cyprus Citizenship

Naturalization

If you are a foreign national who has been legally living in Cyprus for up to seven years, then you are eligible to apply for naturalization. The rule for applying for naturalization is you must have lived in Cyprus for the last year of the seven years. The rules may change and apply differently for people with either Cypriot children or parents of Cypriot children. In their case, they may petition for naturalization within 5 years instead of 7. In order to petition for naturalization, one must submit their entry and departure stamps which may show or prove they have lived in Cyprus for the required seven years. The application takes up two years before one can be claimed an official citizen.

Marriage

Another legal way to achieve citizenship in Cyprus is through marriage. Foreign nationals who are legally married to Cyprus citizens and have completed three years of marriage and two years of residing in Cyprus. For couples who are residing outside Cyprus, but have been wedded for 3 years, they can still petition for citizenship provided they give reasons as to why they need it. If a couple has been married for 5 years and they have a child, there is no need for an explanation, and they can go ahead and apply for citizenship. The means of application also takes up to two years and documents include a marriage document, photocopy of the Cypriot spouse’s documentation, and other legal documents.

Citizenship Through Origin

If your parents were formerly from Cyprus and you were born overseas, you are also qualified to petition for citizenship. There are three main types of citizenship for descent application. The first one is for people, either minors or adults, who were born abroad after 1960, which a father of Cypriot citizenship and after 1990 with a mother of Cypriot citizenship. The second one is for minors born abroad with patents of Cypriot citizenship. Some minors who have patents that acquired citizenship through naturalization are also eligible.
